St Bridget's
Sadly, St Bridget's Nursing Home has closed finally on 28th February 2003. The closure has come about because of the inadequate funding of nursing care by the present government.
St. Bridget's Nursing Home is somewhat unique in that the home belongs to St. Cuthbert's parish, although the ownership rests with the Trustees of the Diocese and as such has charitable status.

The home was established in 1985 by the then parish priest, Fr. C. Horan. It was intended to provide care for the elderly and frail Catholics of the seven parishes in the town. Consequently, the ethos and philosophy of the Home was based on our Christian and Catholic faith, while still accepting residents of other religious denominations or none. The reality of the situation has somewhat changed over the years due to the government reforms of care in the community. The Home is classified as a 'nursing' home as distinct from a 'residential' home. In other words the residents have the professional care of registered nurses 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

People wishing to come to St. Bridget's need to be assessed by Social Services/NHS staff to determine if their condition requires full nursing care, otherwise they will be directed towards a 'residential' home. The Home is situated next to the parish house at 132 Stockton Road. Further information can be sought from the Matron - Mrs R Hewitt on tel. (01429) 241070. All enquiries are most welcome and an actual visit to the home is recommended.
