The Day Centre

The Day Centre was established at St. Cuthbert's in the early 1980's. It was run and staffed by volunteers for several years. During that time the organisation applied to the local authorities for grant aid on an annual basis. Gradually we realised that we had to employ a paid staff to run the centre.
The centre welcomed any elderly person who would benefit from a day at the centre, although initially we catered for people from the parish of St. Cuthbert's. In more recent years, since the early nineties and the introduction of 'Care in the Community', the St Cuthbert's Day Centre is contracted to the Hartlepool Social Services to provide this service to the elderly; at present we are contracted to provide 25 places per day, five days a week.

All the elderly using the centre come through a process of assessment by Social Services as part of their care provision by the local authority. However, since the early days we have had a tacit agreement that several 'guests' from the parish can attend the Centre.

In recent years the Centre has undergone a programme of upgrading and improvement at considerable expense to the Centre itself. This work has involved a complete new kitchen, a hair salon, bathroom and laundry room as well as some new furnishings.

Our sixteen-seater Ambulance van goes out to collect the people and bring them into the centre and late in the afternoon take them home safely.

At present we have the following staff:

Officer-in-charge: Mrs Ann (Elis) Totty
Cook: Alison Mole
Driver/caretaker: Mr Ben Rigby
Care Assistants

Susan Morrow

Lisa Wormold

Hair dresser: Mrs Maureen Olley (independent)

The financial administration is carried out from the office of St. Cuthbert's. To contact the Centre. Tel. 860777.
